The youth course “Healthy Communication” is a new course for young people aged 13 to 16.
The course is to educate about healthy communication, be able to identify unhealthy communication and recognize the red flags that may indicate violence or harassment. There is also an emphasis on young people knowing their bodies and being able to identify if there is violence or harassment and finally, what they can do if they are subjected to violence.
Two groups will be available from April 2 to April 17 and April 23 to May 9.
The groups will be on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Aflið’s goal is to provide individuals with a safe environment to learn, ask questions and reflect on the course content. Education is one of the best prevention tools we have, and by educating young people about healthy communication, healthy relationships and boundaries, we believe that violence can be reduced and their understanding of its effects and consequences can be improved. Teaching social and emotional skills can help children deal with conflict peacefully and build healthy relationships.
Jóhanna Margrét Ásgeirsdóttir, the organization’s education director, will lead the course. She has been a consultant for Aflið and is a nurse with a diploma in positive psychology and a coach. Jóhanna has extensive experience in education about violence and healthy relationships, and she runs Aflið’s other courses where she has gained experience in creating a safe and supportive environment for all participants. It is very important that the course is led by a facilitator who participants can trust and form a relationship with.
Parents are encouraged to register their children only in consultation with them, but participants can also apply to participate themselves, but all parents will be informed about their children’s participation. Parents and participants will receive detailed information about the content of the course before it begins.
Before the course, an introductory meeting will be held with parents where the goals and content of the course will be reviewed.
