Financial abuse
Financial abuse is when someone cheats you out of money, takes your money from you, refuses to give you your money, or controls how you use your money. (Fjárhagslegt ofbeldi (112.is). Financial abuse can manifest itself in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:
- That the perpetrator gives you money from the joint finances
- That you are denied access to your own money, for example through online banking
- Hiding or concealing money you are entitled to
- Using money to control
- Taking out a loan in your name without your permission
Financial violence can also manifest itself as an obstacle to an individual’s ability to earn their own income, for example by preventing an individual from getting a job or causing you to lose your job.
